This distinctive hand-woven antique Aubusson carpet has an uncustomary charm and immediacy, in contrast to the stately Neo-classical formality more typical of such carpets made in France of the time. It features a circular medallion embellished by a central leafy rosette, a surrounding wreath of roses, and a scalloped flowery outer corolla. A delicate acanthus vine scroll border frames the field. The palette of soft earthen colors is entirely appropriate to the understated beauty of the design.
